The first death in this
town is not now known, but the first recorded in the town record of deaths is
that of an infant son of Benoni and Lucy Gleason, named James, who was born
April 5, 1789, and died on the following day. With the exception of the child
above mentioned, no inscription on any gravestone records a death earlier than
that of Captain William Barber, which occurred August 11, 1789, at the age of
forty-six years.
